The Card Collab – Issue #10
If you've been part of the trading card game hobby for any length of time, you've probably experienced it.
A new product is announced months in advance. Excitement builds across social media. Players begin planning new decks, collectors start setting money aside, and local game stores receive countless questions about preorders.
Then release day arrives.
Within minutes, the product is gone.
Whether it's a limited Pokémon collection, a One Piece booster box, a Yu-Gi-Oh! anniversary release, or a Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair, the story has become increasingly familiar. Products that players genuinely want to open, play, or collect often disappear almost immediately, only to reappear online at two, three, or even four times their original price.
Recently, that conversation returned once again, this time surrounding Magic's newest Secret Lair Commander deck, Goblin Storm.
But the discussion extends far beyond Goblins.
It raises a question that affects nearly every corner of the hobby.
When demand consistently outpaces supply, who ultimately benefits?
A Deck Many Players Had Been Waiting For
On paper, Goblin Storm looked like a dream product.
It combined one of Magic's most beloved creature types with a fully built Commander deck, exclusive artwork from acclaimed artist Wizard of Barge, and a collection of desirable reprints that appealed to both players and collectors alike.
For Commander players, it offered a ready-to-play Goblin deck filled with personality.
For collectors, it featured entirely new artwork that transformed familiar cards into something unique.
For fans of Wizard of Barge, it represented the opportunity to own an entire deck illustrated in the artist's unmistakable style.
Personally, it checked every box.
Ever since getting back into Magic, I've wanted to build a Goblin Commander deck. Goblins were one of the first tribes that caught my attention when I started learning the game almost a year ago. They were fast, unpredictable, and never seemed to take themselves too seriously.
