The Card Collab – Issue #12
If someone offered you enough money to buy your entire trading card collection, would you accept?
For many collectors, that answer might depend on the number. Collections can represent years of trading, investing, and building something that reflects who you are as a collector. Some people collect for competitive play, others for nostalgia, and many do both.
But even the largest collections often have one card that stands apart from everything else.
It might be a card pulled from a childhood booster pack, a card received from someone special, or a card connected to a moment that shaped your love for the hobby. It may not be the most expensive card you own, but it is the one you would never replace.
That is what makes collecting unique.
The value of a card is not always determined by its market price. Sometimes, the true value comes from the memories attached to it.
For this issue of The Card Collab, we asked our team members Tim, Michael, and Obie:
"If someone offered to buy your entire collection today, what is the one card you would refuse to sell, and why?"
Their answers were completely different, but they all shared the same theme.
The most meaningful cards are not always the ones everyone else is chasing.
They are the ones that tell your story.
Tim: The Planeswalker’s Journey
For Tim, the card he would refuse to sell is Elspeth, Sun's Champion from Magic: The Gathering's Theros set.
What makes Tim's story interesting is that when he first acquired the card, he did not fully understand the significance of what he had. Like many players entering the hobby, he was still learning the game and discovering what made certain cards stand out.

After learning how to play Magic, Tim opened his first booster box and split it with his friend John at a Starbucks. At the time, he wasn't chasing a specific card or searching for a valuable pull. He was simply experiencing one of the most exciting parts of trading card games: opening packs and discovering something new.
"I had no idea what it was other than it was a planeswalker, and they felt more powerful back then."
For many newer Magic players, planeswalkers represented something different from traditional cards. They weren't just creatures or spells. They were powerful characters with their own stories, personalities, and abilities that felt like they were being brought directly into the game.
To Tim, Elspeth represented everything you want from a collectible trading card. It had incredible artwork, a powerful presence in gameplay, and a character whose story made the card feel even more meaningful.
Part of what makes Elspeth special is the journey she has gone through within the Magic: The Gathering universe. Her story is one of resilience, sacrifice, and constantly overcoming impossible odds. She has fought against gods, fallen in battle, escaped the underworld, and continued to push forward despite everything she endured. Along the way, she wielded powerful weapons like the Shadowspear and eventually returned in a new form as an archangel.
Elspeth's story is defined by being broken down and reforged stronger than before.
That is part of what makes the character resonate with so many players. She represents perseverance, determination, and the ability to continue moving forward despite the challenges in front of her.
For Tim, owning an Elspeth card is not just about having a powerful planeswalker from a memorable set. It represents a character with a story that matches the same reasons many players become attached to their favorite cards in the first place.
While the card itself may not hold the same competitive relevance it once did, its importance has never changed. Tim played with Elspeth, brought it to tournaments, and proudly kept it displayed in his binder.
He considers himself both a player and collector because of experiences like this. The card was not something that simply sat in a collection. It was part of his journey through the game.
When asked if the card would still matter if it became financially worthless, his answer was simple: yes.
"The value is in the gatherings I've had with it, in tournament play or kitchen magic."
For Tim, the true value of the card comes from everything connected to it. The tournaments, casual games, and memories created with friends are what transformed it from a piece of cardboard into something meaningful.
He believes every collector has a card they could never let go of because it represents something personal.
"Human nature."
A card becomes priceless when it connects us to something bigger than itself.
For Tim, that connection comes from the world of Theros, the character of Elspeth, and the memories created while playing the game he enjoys.
Even though he no longer knows which exact copy of Elspeth was the original pull because he eventually owned multiple copies for gameplay, he still knows one of them is the card that started the journey.
And sometimes, that is all that matters.
Michael: A Priceless PSA 10 Pop. 1
Michael's answer takes the idea of a priceless card in a completely different direction.
The card he would never sell is not an official Pokémon release, a rare chase card, or a collectible with significant market value.
It is a custom Pokémon card created by his girlfriend.

Last year, on his birthday, Michael received a surprise gift that he never expected. After opening his birthday presents, his girlfriend gave him one final gift.
Inside was a custom Pokémon card featuring Michael and his girlfriend, professionally graded as a PSA Gem Mint 10.
The card had no monetary value in the traditional sense.
But to Michael, it became the most valuable card in his collection.
"I never knew how much I was chasing a card like this until I was given it."
What made the card special was not the artwork alone. It was the thought behind it.
The card represented his girlfriend's support for his hobbies and her understanding of something that brought him joy.
It became a reminder that the people around us can become part of our collecting journey, even if they are not collectors themselves.
Michael explained that the card represents being in a great place in life and having someone who appreciates his passions.
It also changed how he viewed sharing the hobby.
While he already considered himself both a collector and player, this card represented something different. It showed that trading card games could be something shared with the people closest to us.
If the card was lost, it would be completely irreplaceable.
Not because of the cardboard itself, but because there would never be another moment exactly like the one when he received it.
When people ask about the card, Michael's favorite part is telling the story behind it and explaining the effort his girlfriend put into creating something so personal.
"I think the value changes for every collector. I have cards that are worth a lot of money in today's market, but the card that means the most to me is the one that is worthless to the next collector."
That is what makes collecting special.
A card's value can change depending on who is holding it.
Obie: The Scratched Charizard That Started It All
For my own collection, the answer has always been easy.
The one card I would never sell is my Base Set Shadowless Charizard.
The condition is far from perfect. The card has scratches and imperfections from years of ownership.
But those imperfections are part of its story.
I traded for the card when I was in elementary school. Another student offered me his scratched Charizard in exchange for my Base Set holographic Chansey, which had unfortunately been damaged after I spilled grape soda on it.
I made sure to tell him about the damage, and he was upfront about the condition of his Charizard.
The trade was made.

The entire bus ride home, I couldn't stop looking at the card.
At that age, owning a Charizard felt like owning one of the coolest things imaginable. It wasn't about grading, market value, or investment potential.
It was simply a kid being excited about a card.
Almost 30 years later, I still have that same Charizard.
And that is what makes it special.
The card represents where my collecting journey began. It reminds me of trading with friends, collecting Pokémon cards as a kid, and my dad being my number one supporter of my hobby by taking me to places like Books-A-Million where I could play, trade, and meet other players.
That card also helped shape the collector I became.
Even at a young age, I understood the importance of protecting my cards. I kept them sleeved, organized, and stored properly. The Pokémon movie promotional cards I received watching with my father and special collectibles like the Wizards of the Coast magazine Gold Stamped Pikachu cards he surprised me with were kept sealed because I understood they meant something.
The card itself has changed meaning over time.
When I first got it, it represented excitement.
Now, it represents nearly three decades of memories and how much has changed since I was that kid sitting on a school bus staring at a Charizard card.
If someone offered to buy it, the answer would still be no.
Even if it was damaged beyond recognition, the memories attached to it would remain.
The cardboard can be replaced.
The story cannot.
Why Every Collector Has "The One"
Three completely different cards.
Three completely different stories.
But the reason they matter is surprisingly similar.
One came from a first booster box.
One came from a thoughtful birthday gift.
One came from a childhood trade.
None of these stories are about pulling the most expensive card or owning the rarest collectible.
They are about moments.
Every collector has a card that reminds them of a specific time in their life. Maybe it reminds them of the person who introduced them to the hobby, the friend they traded with, the first tournament they attended, or the excitement of opening their first pack.
The hobby is built around cardboard, but the memories are what give those cards meaning.
That is why two collectors can look at the same card and see completely different things.
One person may see market value.
Another person may see a memory they never want to lose.
Final Thoughts
Trading card games give us the opportunity to collect incredible artwork, build powerful decks, and chase exciting cards.
But the cards that stay with us the longest are usually not the ones we expected.
They are the ones connected to a story.
A card from childhood.
A gift from someone important.
A reminder of the people and experiences that shaped our journey.
Because collecting has never only been about what is inside the sleeve.
It is about the memories we build around it.
And sometimes, the most valuable card in our collection is the one that money could never replace.
