The Card Collab – Issue #9

For many trading card game players, the cards are what initially draw them into the hobby. It's the excitement of opening packs, discovering new mechanics, building decks, and chasing that next great card.

But over time, something else often becomes just as important.

The people sitting across the table.

Whether you're playing Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, One Piece, Lorcana, or another trading card game, many players eventually find themselves becoming part of what is commonly known as a pod.

While the term can have different meanings depending on the game or event, a pod is often used to describe a consistent group of players who regularly gather to play together. In many ways, it becomes the hobby's version of a bowling league, poker night, or weekly pickup basketball game.

The games matter.

But the relationships built around them often matter even more.

What Exactly Is a Pod?

At its simplest, a pod is a group of players who regularly play together.

In Magic: The Gathering, a pod often refers to a group of more than four players sitting down for a game. However, many players use the term more broadly to describe their core playgroup.

These groups can form at local game stores, through friends, coworkers, family members, or even players who met through organized play events.

Over time, a pod develops its own identity.

Every group has its personalities.

There's usually the player who loves complicated combo decks.

The one who plays nothing but aggressive strategies.

The collector who always shows up with the newest cards.

And the friend who somehow becomes the target every single game.

The decks change, but the group dynamic becomes part of the experience.

How Our Pod Started

For me, the idea of a pod didn't begin with trading cards.

It started with a group of friends getting together for occasional poker nights. We'd spend an evening around the table, catch up on life, share a few laughs, and enjoy each other's company.

Then one night, a friend suggested we try something different.
